“Ty” by Cara Romero, 2017. Created in collaboration with model, Ty Harris (Navajo), and apprentice Leah Kolakowski (Keweenaw Bay Ojibwe). Handmade necklace by Leah Mata (Chumash) of white olive shells gathered from Chumash territory on the California Coast. A visualization of the traditional shell trade between Native women of California and the Southwest for thousands of years.
Free museum talk - Native American Photographers
On Thursday 8th March I will be speaking at the Bristol Museum as part of their monthly Winter Lecture series.
The talk takes place on International Women's day and will focus on the work of Chemehuevi fine art photographer
, whose powerful tryptich 'Water Memories' is now in the permanent collection of the Bristol Museum.
In this talk we will see how Native American photographers create modern narratives from within tribal communities, where native people hold the cameras and present themselves as empowered, complex and contemporary individuals.

Spring exhibition
To coincide with the museum lecture our spring exhibition will also focus on the work of
. This show will include some of her best ground breaking work from past years and her newest creations and collaborations. Cara's work is always exciting, surprising and undeniably powerful. The exhibition will run from 9th March - 31st May 2018.

Our Valentine's Day photo this year features two Zuni rabbits carved by Jimmy Yawakia whose family name means 'to fall in love'.

Last month I had the joyful task of travelling back to the source in search of new jewellery and
. Some of the new fetishes, including these adorable love bunnies, are now on the website, with more to follow over the coming days and weeks. The new jewellery on display in the gallery includes a range by Leah Mata (Chumash) whose magnificent necklace is worn by model Ty in the photograph at the begining of this message.

The current exhibition '
' closes at the end of February. It celebrates the work of several masterful colourists including Nocona Burgess, Yatika Fields, Billy Hensley, Dan Lomahaftewa, Debra Yepa-Pappan, Cara Romero and Tony Tiger. This exhibition highlights the range and depth of colour investigation flourishing within 21st century Native American art. More importantly it is a real feast for the eyes, food for the soul and is guaranteed to brighten any winters day! Don't miss it!
Another museum acquisition
I am delighted to announce that Rainmaker Gallery recently secured yet another museum acquisition of Native art. The American Museum in Britain purchased an exquisite baskets by Cherokee artist Shan Goshorn that was created for our 2017 exhibition '
'. The basket belongs to the 'Warrior Bloodline series' the rest of which was exhibited at the Venice Biennale 2017.
