WE ARE NATIVE WOMEN

 23rd March - 31st May 2017

This year's spring exhibition at Rainmaker Gallery marks the 400th anniversary of the death of Pocahontas and celebrates the strength and diversity of Native American women.

'We Are Native Women' brings together recent portraits  of indigenous women of all ages: strong, vulnerable, nurturing, powerful, desirable, provocative, dangerous, real and supernatural. The artwork highlights communal struggles, concerns and individual life choices of women from several Native cultures across the continent.

Featured artists include Marla Allison (Laguna Pueblo), Alison Bremner (Tlingit), Sierra Edd (Navajo/Diné), Shan Goshorn (Cherokee), Shelley Niro (Mohawk), Chris Pappan (Osage, Kanza, Sioux), Debra Yepa-Pappan (Jemez Pueblo & Korean), Luanne Redeye (Seneca), Cara Romero (Chemehuevi), Kali Spitzer (Kaska Dena & Jewish), Eugene Tapahe (Navajo) and Zoe Urness (Tlingit & Cherokee)

The exhibition includes a range of media, from painting and printmaking to photography and basket weaving and is curated by Joanne Prince of Rainmaker Gallery and Dr Stephanie Pratt, Cultural Ambassador for the Crow Creek Dakota Tribal Council. It is one of several events happening across the country under the umbrella of ‘Pocahontas 2017’, co-ordinated by the Big Ideas Company.

Artist Talk with Marla Allison

“I paint because I was passed down a gift from my grandfathers; I paint to continue what they started.  My art is what lets me connect the past to my future. My paintings are based on the contemporary, which borrows from the past. I paint so I remember where I came from. I paint so others can remember where I come from. I paint to be remembered.” Marla Allison  Hear artist Marla Allison speak about her art, her life and her Pueblo culture on Thursday 23 March, 3pm-4pm at Friends Meeting House, 126 Hampton Road Bristol BS6 6JE.
